Forbes Staff February 11, 2022 @ 7:31 pm UN-DH and IAPA condemn the murder of journalist Heber López

The organizations demanded that the Mexican government take action to prevent violence against journalists; There are 6 murdered in the year.

“The murder of Heber López highlights the vulnerability of those who carry out journalistic activity far from the largest urban centers. It is essential that authorities and society support the essential journalistic activity that allows all people to have access to plural information”, said Jesús Peña, deputy representative of the UN-DH in Mexico.

López, who was shot dead on Thursday in his office, was director of the Noticias Web portal and his death was confirmed by his brother Irving López Vásquez, who also works as a communicator.

“The journalist Heber López Vásquez had a recognized track record in the area, having worked in various media and founded his own digital media, Web News, which provided local information, including political and corruption issues, with remarkable coverage in the area. ”, expressed the UN-DH.

Irving said his brother "was with his son when he was killed" as he demanded justice for his crime.

According to the Article 19 organization, the communicator had reported attacks against him to this organization in 2019.

“The murder of Mr. Heber López, like other murders of journalists, not only silences a voice, but also frightens all the people who practice journalism in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. It is necessary to react to this terrible act and guarantee conditions so that journalists do not ask themselves before publishing a story if those words could be the trigger for a threat or an attack,” added Peña.

In addition, the agency considered that, although the arrest of two people for their possible relationship with the case may be important, the investigation must be carried out "with the highest standards of due diligence, which implies exhausting all lines of investigation, including linking this attack to the journalistic activity of Mr. López.”
